Over thirty elected Precinct Chairs gathered at the Peter Brown for Houston office on February 23rd, 2009 to discuss their efforts and experiences during the 2008 election season.

The Peter Brown for Houston campaign gathered this unique group of people not for political purposes, but to learn directly from the grassroots what works to increase civic engagement.

The Precinct Chairs talked about their individual get-out-the-vote (GOTV) operations and hosting neighborhood meet-and-greets with the candidates leading up to the election. They also suggested taking advantage of structures already in place like neighborhood associations and civic clubs.

On Thursday, February 19 Council Member Peter Brown participated in a panel discussion on development and land use in the City of Houston hosted by the Urban Land Institute.The other participants were also candidates in this year’s mayoral race: City Controller Annise Parker, former City Attorney Gene Locke, and Harris County Department of Education Trustee Roy Morales. This was the first time all four participated in a public forum together.

One exchange which highlighted the differences between the candidates centered on neighborhood development. Council Member Brown pointed out that fiscal responsibility is not just about spending less, it’s about using taxpayer dollars wisely. This means investing in projects that people will want to live in for years to come. It’s about building sustainable communities.

Hundreds of Houstonians gathered at Discovery Green and schools around Houston Saturday, February 7th to watch a free performance of Chorus! The show was simulcast from the Wortham Theater Center in downtown Houston at 7:15 pm.

ABC13 Eyewitness News team member Laura Whitley hosted the CityCast and took viewers backstage for interviews with members of the cast and production team. KUHF Houston Public Radio 88.7 FM also played the performance.

 

Thirty Attend First Peter Brown for Houston Volunteer Meeting of 2009

On January 31st, 2009, 30 supporters gathered to learn more about volunteer opportunities with the Peter Brown for Houston campaign.

Food and drinks were provided to the group who introduced themselves to each other and shared their reasons for supporting Councilmember Brown.
